Interactive Video Object Manipulation

Microsoft Popfly

Popfly is the fun and easy way to build and share mashups, gadgets, and Web pages. It’s made up of online visual tools for building Web pages and mashups and a social network where you can host, share, rate, comment and even remix creations from other Popfly users.

I thought Pipes was already pretty cool, Popfly seems to take it to another level as you are able to create all kinds of stuff including games. The mashup editor looks good btw, have not tried to build a 'game' yet though. It seems to be really suited towards the non-technical user, i.e. the possibilities are maybe somewhat limited. But who knows you might be able to create a really great game :)

PowerRail

What started out as an assignment for the course Multimedia Authoring is now evolving more and more into a real usable product: Our (Timen and mine) PowerRail application. Driven by papervision3d and xml, our application delivers a versatile "railed" 3d presenting tool.

The main goal of our project is to create a way to present content of different natures, such as a educational presentation, a portfolio presentation or a 3d art exposition for example. We are still experimenting with different features to include in the program such as images, text, 3d models and video's. We have created some demo's to showcase the possibilities of our program.

We would appreciate it very much if you guys could take a look at it and maybe share some of your idea's / comments about this project with us!

SourceBinder

When I stumbled upon this I couldn't resist posting it here:
SourceBinder is (as they describe it on their site) "a node-based visual framework for easy prototyping and real-time tuning of Flash based visual applications."

For an example see here and be amazed....

The project is currently in private alpha, but their previous project FlashFilterLab seems like a previous version of SourceBinder.

Korsakow system

Today I was reading about The Moving Image Lab workshop from mediamatic and the tools they are planning to use. Apparently there is a free tool available to create interactive films:

The Korsakow System is an easy-to-use editing software which allows you to publish interactive films on- and offline.

Korsakow-Films are films with a twist

They are interactive - the viewer has influence on the film.

They are rule-based - the author decides on the rules scenes relate to each other, he does not create a fixed order.

They are generative - the order of the scenes is calculated while the viewer looks at a Korsakow-project.

Korsakow-projects can only be viewed on a computer. They are delivered via internet-streaming, DVD-Rom or CD-Rom.

Interactive comedy: 'The Act'

Recently I stumbled upon a recent example of an interactive video. The Act was supposed to be an arcade game, but (sadly) is unreleased. The gameplay basically consists of turning a knob (!) to influence what happens in a scene. The game features hand-drawn art by former Disney animators.

Anyway, you can view an example below:

Interactive Video of a(-) typical Design Process / Brain Dump

Hey all,

It might well be the case that I will be there tomorrow, at MMA, due to some rescheduling of the appointment I had.

I just got to thinking about the suggestion AE made again, about creating an interactive video as a "Making of...". If I will be able to pick up a camera somewhere, and find some spare time, I'd like to try and make a "making of" the Broad Dikes videoclip (and just for you leechers, this has nothing to do with interaction between females).

Let's see what Friday will bring, as PV will brief us on an illustration and possibly animation job, as to know if I will have some time to work on the above.

Feeling the need to clear my head of all the different, but fun, stuff I am involved in, I might start posting on the blog more often. Lots of "if..."'s and "might..."'s!

Wii mote as MIDI controller/music interface

Today I stumbled upon an article in Shook magazine that briefly mentioned the wii mote as a music software controller. Apparently the wii mote is an excellent way to control music software. I thought this might be interesting for the people experimenting with the wii mote at the VU. There are many sources available but here are some of the ones I found interesting:

Osculator + Kyma (background info here)
Osculator wii mote manual
Ableton Live + wii mote (there are many youtube videos actually about this subject)

Interactive Video on YouTube?

Finally, a blog post! This video claims to be the first interactive video on YouTube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbEei0I3kMQ

It uses what has been dubbed "annotations" (which is a strange name from my point of view), as described on http://www.google.com/support/youtube/bin/answer.py?answer=92710.

Cheers,

Marek

P.S. Am I the only one getting the feeling the ICQ folks must have had when MSN came up with Messenger? :-)

Adobe TV

This may be a little off-topic, but since you are also doing video productions and whatnot this might be interesting. Steve Homes shows how to create a 3D scene from a (flat) photoshop file in after effects. Also in the same scene, instead of using the particle system he uses dots (from a font) to create the effect of fireflies flying around. I think this is very cool, especially the 3d scene and the light/shadows. There are also other videos on the site that show new creative techniques. Enjoy.

Balance of the Planet

For the last few days I've been reading some articles about serious games and I came across a game called "Balance of the Planet". It reminded me of the initial Clima Futura idea. Check out the guy who made the game back in the early 90's:

Also a remake of the game is being developed. I tried this remake and it's actually quite boring, but all the formulas being used might be interesting.

http://www.nu.nl/news.jsp?n=1476195&c=54&rss

In this presentation, Sawyer and Smith will present a complete overview of their Serious Games Taxonomy 1.0, providing not only a stronger definition of the serious games field, but also presenting a platform upon which to drive further activity and understanding of serious games, including market opportunities, research requirements, advocacy, criticism, and more. Feedback from the audience will be used to drive refinements to the work prior to publishing it formally.

Story and Simulations for Serious Games

Vandaag kwam ik dit boek tegen:

Story and Simulations for Serious Games: Tales from the Trenches

How to create a simulation where participants have a sense of freedom and personal control while still maintaining the structure necessary for an effective story is a difficult task indeed. This book examines how to create an engaging, effective story (necessary to teach participants), while relating practical considerations of building a simulation. It also looks at stories as classic ways of teaching and gathering knowledge and considers other theories of interactive narrative design such as synthetic story creation and management and participant-generated story experiences. It also discusses enabling technologies in artificial intelligence, synthetic characters design and development, speech recognition technology, 3D modelling, and the future of story-driven games. Story Driven Simulations reviews the existing efforts in this field as well as focusing on the recent efforts of Paramount Pictures and The Institute for Creative Technologies at the University of Southern California, where this expert author team created successful simulations for the U.S. Army, Department of Defense, as well as other educational simulations.

*Learn to create a new kind of gaming experience that will broaden the audience for entertainment games and simulations by engaging game users at an emotional rather than a purely visceral level.

*Learn to engage players in more memorable, effective experiences that can deal with far more complex and demanding skills such as management, leadership and crisis decision-making.

*Features a unique mix of theory and application providing practical advice using real-world examples from recent military research and development projects
